I just love holidays & special celebrations! Not only are you with people you love but you’re also celebrating & everyone is so happy. I also love these occasions because of the gifts & gift giving is one of my favorite things! When I was little, my mom taught me the importance of trying to find the perfect gift. She always made everything so special growing up & still does to this day. We had heart-shaped treats, handmade cards & homemade gifts for special occasions. This was the standard for her, even before Pinterest! Amazing right? Mom once taught me how to sew a decorative pillow by hand for my dad. I was so excited to give this gift to my dad because I had put my heart into it. Funny enough, it was a pillow in the shape of a heart. Awww.
When I get invited to celebrations I always try to give a thoughtful gift to the recipient. My sister-in-law’s baby shower was coming up and I wanted to do something extra special for her without breaking the bank, as I was also expecting with my son at the time. I saw these onesie cupcakes on Pinterest from the Club Chica Circle and thought they were adorable!

Here’s what you’ll need:
~ Four onesies – I found mine at Ross Stores but you can also get something similar here, here & here.
~ Two pairs of mittens – Also found at Ross Stores but you can get something similar here, here & here. (Sorry, I couldn’t find exact matches!)
~ Cupcake Box – from Michael’s but you can also get it here.
~ Cupcake Liners – I already had these on hand. You could also use “It’s A Girl!” cupcake liners.
When doing onesie cupcakes, I always look for onesie packs that have two patterns & two solids. It really looks nice on the finished product. I love these colorful onesies & almost perfectly matching mittens. In case you didn’t notice the mittens actually have cupcakes on them. How perfect is that? I also love that they go so well with the cupcake box. This happened purely by accident, I promise! This was the first time I made these & didn’t even have the boxes yet so I had no idea it would go so well together.
Keep in mind when buying the onesies, the onesie size will determine the cupcake size. Smaller onesies will create a smaller, tighter cupcake & larger size onesies will create a fatter cupcake. If you go too big in size though it will be harder to work with & harder to fit in the cupcake liner & box. I chose size 3-9 months & that was a perfect size. I had fat little cupcakes that were still easy to work with. If you don’t have that option try to stick with 9 months. I think you will be happy with the outcome.
Technically you only need 2 pairs of mittens (or socks) for this project. You only need to use one mitten or sock per cupcake. Sometimes you’ll find packs of mittens in larger quantities than what you need. I like to keep the extras aside for use on my next gift. You could also put the extras in the bottom of the box or gift bag as extras for the recipient. Either way, they won’t go to waste.
Steps:
~ To start you will need to remove all tags & stickers from the onesies and lay them out flat.
~ Decide which mittens will go with which onesies based on colors & patterns.
~ Fold your cupcake in thirds lengthwise like the picture below. If you are using a smaller size or larger size then you may need to adjust your folds to get the perfect look.
~ Roll your mitten in half & place it at the top of the folded onesie. This will be the top of your cupcake
~ Roll from the fattest part into the smallest part of the onesie keeping your mitten in place. Roll tight or loose to change the shape of your cupcake until it looks perfect.
~ Secure the end & bottom with scotch tape once you have your desired cupcake.
~ Apply additional scotch tape around the base & bottom if needed to ensure the cupcake doesn’t come unraveled.
~ Roll remaining cupcakes and place in liners. I used 3-4 liners per cupcake to get the desired effect. Having more liners helps to keep the shape. I also taped each cupcake to the liner so when the cupcake was removed from the box, the liner would be attached to the cupcake.
*Hint: When removing the cupcake liners from the pack don’t separate all the liners. Just remove the quantity you need (3-4) at a time so those stay intact. This is easier than trying to line them up again to keep their form.
~ Assemble the cupcake box & place cupcakes in the box, alternating the designs.
Voila! Your onesie cupcakes are complete. Prepare for everyone to oooh & ahhh over your gift at the baby shower. They actually passed mine around to show everyone because they were so impressed. I was so happy with the outcome & how beautiful the cupcakes turned out. It was so nice everyone appreciated the final product, especially the new mommy to be.
